Disaster Philanthropy

Community members help each other in times of crisis

Objective

Unexpected and unplanned events have a large impact on the health and well-being of those affected by the disaster. Whether it’s a hurricane, wildfire, earthquake, flood or other situation, it’s important to support recovery efforts that help people recover and rebuild their lives, health and well-being.

When a disaster occurs, The Humana Foundation considers multiple factors when deciding to send philanthropic relief to local and national organizations helping those affected. Some factors considered when making this decision include:

The number of Humana members, employees and facilities impacted.
The severity of the disaster.
The needs being addressed by local and national organizations.

The Foundation partners with organizations and sends disaster relief funding to address these needs, especially as they relate to our areas of focus such as food or asset security. This approach ensures all factors affecting the community are considered and addressed and long-term recovery may begin.

We committed more than

$50 million

disaster relief to-date in 2020 to support immediate and long-term COVID-19 relief and recovery efforts, partnering with national and community service organizations to support essential workers, food security, behavioral health and community-based organizations.

Partners

The Humana Foundation works with the following partners on our disaster philanthropy efforts:

Direct Relief to provide medical supplies and prescription medicals in times of a disaster.
Americares to administer a donor advised fund for first responders.
The National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics to offer volunteer opportunities to Humana’s doctor and nurse employees.
National Rural Health Association to provide disaster response training for community health workers and Humana employees.
Save the Children for children-focused disaster responses.
