The Humana Foundation is committed to health equity and co-creating communities where leadership, culture and systems work to improve and sustain positive health outcomes.

At this time, we intend to invest these funds over a number of years through our existing Community Partners Program and Strategic Community Investment Program, the application processes for which will begin in 2021.

The Humana Foundation is partnering with various community foundations and national organizations across the United States. Please visit our News & Updates and Disaster Philanthropy pages for information on where we are giving. Organizations can apply directly to community foundations and other organizations in their local communities.

The Humana Foundation believes that positive, sustainable change requires partnership and collaboration. We accept applications from individual organizations and collaboration across sectors, including religious institutions, nonprofit organizations, government entities, academic institutions, grassroots organizations, and for-profit organizations and start-ups when collaborating with other qualified entities.

To be eligible for funding, all organizations must register their status through the Causes portal (https://causes.benevity.org/). Please contact Benevity directly at 1-855-237-7875, Option "1" for registration assistance.

The Humana Foundation funds tax exempt organizations including non-profits, governmental organizations, and faith-based organizations.

No, The Humana Foundation does not provide funding for sponsorships and fundraising events. All potential sponsorships should be submitted to Humana Inc. via email to sponsorshiprequests@humana.com.

The budget for each grant should reflect all of the expenses that are required for, and can be tracked directly to, the grant project. We call these costs “direct costs.” In addition, we may cover a limited amount of expenses that cannot be tracked directly to the grant project. We call these costs “indirect costs.”

Our indirect cost policy provides that the indirect cost rate may not exceed 15 percent of the direct costs of the project, excluding the costs of the following:

• Consultants, contractors and subgrants
• Equipment and capital expenditures
• Fee-for-service charges
• Fiscal sponsor fees
• Tuition and Learning & Development Resources

The indirect cost rate may not cover all of a grantee’s general operating costs, and grantees may need to use other resources to cover these costs.

Applicants should include their indirect cost associated with the proposal in the ‘other’ section of the budget template in the application portal.  Please note next to the expense description within the budget that the item is an indirect cost that would also help to calculate the 15% indirect rule. 

Strategic Community Investments communities include: 

• Baton Rouge (8 parishes): Ascension, East BR, West BR, ‎East Feliciana, West Feliciana, Iberville Livingston, Point Coupee and St Helena

• Broward County (1 county): Broward County

• Jacksonville (1 county): Duval County

• Knoxville (19 counties): Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Claiborne, Cocke, Cumberland, Fentress, Grainger, Hamblen, Jefferson, Knox, Loudon, Monroe, Morgan, Putnam, Roane, Scott, Sevier and Union 

• Louisville (12 counties): Kentucky: Bullitt, Hardin, Henry, Jefferson, Nelson, Oldham, Shelby, Spencer and Washington. Indiana: Clark, Floyd and Harrison 

• New Orleans (9 parishes): Jefferson, Orleans, Lafourche, Assumption, Plaquemines, St Charles, St James, St John the Baptist and Terrebonne 

• San Antonio (8 counties): Bexar, Medina, Bandera, Kendall, Comal, Guadalupe, Wilson and Atascosa.

• Tampa Bay (3 counties): Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas

Thank you for the work you’re doing to make a positive impact on your community! While we’d love to take meetings with every organization that asks, we unfortunately don’t have the capacity to do so. Please review the Our Work section of our website to better understand if your organization is a good fit for our strategy.  Thank you for submitting a proposal to The Humana Foundation. We typically receive many more compelling proposals than we have resources to fund, and therefore we sometimes have to make tough decisions. We generally try to select a diverse portfolio of projects that show promise for large impact on health equity and high potential for sustainability, scalability and replicability. Sometimes a proposal is not selected due to one or more of the following reasons:  

• The results described in the proposal were not articulated as clearly as results outlined in similar proposals. 

• The cost per person was high (factoring in the level of results and challenges participants face) when compared with similar proposals.  

• There was not as much clarity around the evidence that the approach works to achieve stated results, when compared with other proposals. 

• There was not as much clarity around how the key project staff, partners, or collaborators have the capabilities, expertise, attributes, or experience to do and achieve what they must for program success, when compared with other proposals. 

• The allocation of funds as outlined in your budget was not well-aligned with the Humana Foundation’s strategy (i.e. the bulk of the budget requested was going to general expenses).  

We know that tackling the challenges in our communities for a healthier more equitable community takes the work of all of us.  Thank you for taking the time to apply and we encourage your organization to continue to work towards a healthier more equitable community for all.

To nominate an organization, visit the “Nominate a Cause” page. Benevity (our Humana Together administrator), will reach out directly to the organization to verify their non-profit status and to identify who they serve. Benevity will continue to attempt contact for four weeks and will provide updates on the status. Upon approval the Executive/Associate may then submit their donation to be matched.

Eligible organizations must be one of the following:

- Recognized by and registered with the United States I.R.S. as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization

- Accredited public or private pre-K - 12 schools or school districts or public or non-profit colleges and universities to which contributions are tax deductible under the Internal Revenue Code of the United States

The Giving Together matching gift program is generally not available for organizations outside the Humana Foundation’s core mission of improving community health and well-being through support of nonprofit partners that promote healthy behaviors, health education, and access to health services. These ineligible organizations may include, but are not limited to, the following:

- Organizations that do not comply with the Foundation’s anti-discrimination policy (the Humana Foundation will not knowingly provide support to organizations that discriminate against a person or group on the basis of age, political affiliation, race, national origin, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, disability, sexual orientation, or religious belief)

- Organizations that provide benefits directly to Humana associates or their families, such as trips, tours, internships, tuition, event tickets, parking privileges, club dues, products and services, or discounts on products or services

- Religious organizations, unless the specific program is designated as nondenominational in nature and benefits a broad range of the community (e.g. soup kitchen, homeless shelter). Note: religious organizations must go through a nomination process and be vetted by Humana Foundation.

- Gifts to entities classified as private foundations or Donor Advised Funds (contributions out of a Donor Advised Fund to an eligible organization as described above would be eligible for matching with donation receipt).
